Member of the Month and Artist Spotlight - October

Congratulations to vivfox for being chosen to be Octobers Artist Spotlight, and Teak for being chosen to be October's Member of the Month! Don't forget to give them both a big congratulations for their positive contributions to the community!

Artist Spotlight - vivfox!
How long have I been drawing? I don't remember the exactly age but somewhere around toddler-hood I picked up a pencil and never set it down. I don't know if its this that keeps me drawing but its what I love the most: you can create anything you want with a pencil. You paint, draw, doodle literally anything. There aren't rules, you can drawn an orange crocodile with a purple hat or you can draw up a whole world. It's a visual creation that is moreorless limitless with what you can create. Thats kind of like magic I think. Advice I have for other artists: 1. Stop looking outward for assurance. You'll never like your art, if you can't tell yourself that and believe it. Which you should, no one is a bad artist. 2. Own ourself, own your style, own your mistakes. You are beautiful, your art will only continue to get better. 3. Practice. Practice. Practice. Grab a tutorial off dA and practice following the steps. Look at pictures of everything and try to get a basic shape. Do reference studies until you can recreate the subject of the study organically on your own. Play with your brushes and settings. Get to know them. Thats really it :D

Member of the Month - Teak!
I've been on Wolfhome since late 2012 and I haven't really left since. I've had some pretty good memories here and got to know a lot of people. I volunteered here as an admin for 7 years and it was an unforgettable experience. I'm glad to have had that opportunity to give back to the community in some way. Now, I plan events on the event committee team. I'm 23 years old and I'm a high-school teacher who draws animals and wildlife. Animals and wildlife conservation is very close to my heart and is a common theme in my works. I love my pets (Sandy the dog, and 3 Betta fish) and I play games in my free time to wind down. Thank you so much for nominating me to be this month's MotM, I appreciate the opportunity and the recognition.

Don't forget, you can nominate a community member for Novembers MoTM and Artist Spotlight! Head over here if you'd like to nominate somebody! The Event Committee is always looking for nominations, and this is a fantastic way to recognize valuable contributors of the community.

A Brief History of Black Cats

Spiders, bats, pumpkins, and ghouls are all classic symbols of Halloween. But one symbol is often also a part of our daily lives, the black cat. Black cats have long been associated with witchcraft, dark and stormy nights, and bad luck, but where did these dark associations come from? Maybe it harkens back to a long-forgotten history of humans huddling in caves, while fearsome creatures prowled just outside the fire’s light. Or maybe legends of witches transforming into mysterious creatures started these superstitions. Wherever the fear of black cats came from, it is most certainly unfounded. Black cats, and cats of all colors, make wonderful companions and can be lovely additions to any home.

Often thought of as the familiar to witches in the Middle Ages, black cats most likely were lumped in with bad feelings at at time in European history when superstition ruled much of human behavior. However, when you look further back, you will find that other cultures actually elevated black cats to a higher status and some even viewed them as vessels of godly powers. In Ancient Egypt, cats were held in the highest regard, and black cats particularly were seen as the hosts of divine beings. Bastet was the Egyptian goddess of the home, fertility, and protection from disease. Bastet had the head of a cat, and so she was a positive association for our feline friends. Other cultures had fruitful superstitions as well, including Japan, where black cats could be seen as signs for prosperity in finances and in love. Not all Europeans hated black cats either, in Ireland they were often seen as signs of good luck, and in France they were good omens of magical events to come.

One of the most infamous myths around black cats is that they will bring bad luck when they cross your path. This urban legend most likely ties back to medieval times when any animal with dark fur or feathers was thought to be a signal of impending death. In 16th century Italy, it was thought that a black cat would lay on a person’s sickbed soon before their death. And in some cultures, it was believed that another family member would die if a black cat was seen during a funeral. Worst of all, beginning in 13th century Europe, and lasting all through the 17th century witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts, black cats were killed along with anyone thought to be a witch due to their associations. Sadly, this dark time in European and United States history left a lasting impact on the reputation of black cats that persists to this day.

So, what is the truth about black cats? They are just like any other cat! Cats are wonderful animals that have taken our hearts from the time they first decided to cohabitate with humans. There is some debate on whether cats can truly be considered domesticated, since they are physiologically unchanged from before they came to human society, but either way, they are often welcome creatures in most homes. When humans switched from hunting and gathering nomadic lifestyles, our food storage and waste brought in many pests, including rodents. Noticing abundant food around human society, cats decided they would come around and began the domestication process around 7500 BCE. Since then, they have proliferated around human society and are a familiar sight in all parts of the world.

There are of course some risks associated with all cats, but none of them are caused specifically by black cats. One problem cats can cause is the decimation of bird populations. Cats are so well adapted to surviving in most environments that they have plenty of free time to hunt for fun. They can quickly become an invasive species in parts of the world where they don’t have natural predators, and this overpopulation, combined with their incredible hunting abilities, can kill 2.4 billion birds every year in the United States alone. For this reason, it is crucial to keep cats indoors, or only have them outside on a harness and leash or under close supervision. Cats also need to be spayed and neutered so that they don’t add to the problem of stray and feral cats. There are up to 160 million feral cats in the United States, and sadly over 860,000 cats are euthanized in animal shelters every year.

These numbers have very real consequences, especially for black cats. Black cats are much more likely to end up in animal shelters, and once they are there, they are much harder to home. The RSPCA reports that 70% of felines in their shelters are either black cats, or black and white. Tabby cats in shelters get 30 times more interest on social media than black cats! It’s sad to think that centuries-old superstitions still cause trouble for these sweet cats to this very day.

Next time you are looking to add a furry companion to your household, consider adopting a black cat. They are often anecdotally considered to be the friendliest cats with great personalities, and a lot of affection to give! You’ll also be helping to reduce their populations in animal shelters, and to end the stigma about their luck. If you already own a mini house panther, don’t forget to celebrate National Black Cat Day on October 27th, and have a happy Halloween!

OCTOBER HOROSCOPE
OCTOBER 2021- The month to cleanse your life and find balance; but the road is a rocky one.

We’re getting close to fall, (or spring for you southern hemisphere types) and with Uranus still in retrograde, (which comes with the saying I absolutely adore: “change or die”) there’s change, change, change all around.
And this month, the glorious month of Libra and Scorpio, is a climactic one for change. October is very much matching with the signs that pass through it- we’re going to be searching for balance, and dealing with some serious deep thinking and passion.

Starting right from the get-go, we’ve got 7 planets in retrograde. (well, 8, but Mercury is specifically in Virgo, so I’ll get to that later.) Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter will end their retrograde this month (on the 6th, 11th, and 18th respectively), so the first two weeks of October are going to feel the most chaotic and overwhelming. The entire month, though, there’s Ceres, (big time on Ceres- this one will pull very strongly for some) Uranus, Neptune, and Chiron. And what do all of these big rocks have in common? Change. Capital C, change. A lot of it being intrinsic change- if you’ve been putting off any sort of work on yourself, like breaking bad or harmful habits; this is going to be the time to do it. Keeping yourself stagnant, turning a blind eye to inner toxicity, or just not giving yourself the worth or love you rightly deserve, will make this a very, very tough time.

Uranus, as mentioned above before, (re: change or die) is going to be that quiet force in the back that’ll be enhancing the absolute need for change. This gassy ol’ thing will be in retrograde all the way until January, so accepting the changes you need to make is going to make life a whole lot easier.
And it’s going to be much more than just an “adapt and go with it” kind of change for October; the combo of Neptune, Chiron, and Ceres (retrograde hitting on the 8th) is going to shake things up. Relationships and your internal self are going to be especially affected. Ceres is going to create some catalysts in life- especially if you find yourself to be a bit codependent on others. Ceres brings about a heightened awareness of toxicity in relationships- don’t be surprised if little things people do bother you a bit extra or if you’ve got alarms going off in your head more in regards to someone more often than usual.

If you’re the type to tend to ignore red flags, this is not the month to do it, nor will it be easy to. Jupiter and Pluto retrogrades will give you a bit of a leg up in a sense; both will give you a push to really take action to communicate and vocalize changes you need. Chiron and Neptune will help out a lot with getting through any conflicts, especially if you’re more sensitive to Pluto and the feelings of isolation/loneliness it can often bring. Chiron will open the door to really, actually look internally and recognize any negative thoughts or feelings you’ve been having. Sources of internal pain will also be more apparent, making it easier to find ways to cope and recover. Neptune- though it can make life feel a little rough- will help out by really keeping you self-aware. You, and everyone else, are going to be much more aware of any sort of lies or attempts at hiding things. Even if those lies are to yourself! This is going to help keep you honest and on task, and if you’re focusing on internal growth and self-love, this is going to make the process much more smooth and give better results than usual. Which, in turn, will make dealing with everyone on the outside much easier.

Saturn will also help divert the focus from personal relationship issues by turning your attention to work- what really is your position? What could you be doing that would benefit yourself more? What traditions (“this is just how we’ve always done it” ugh. eyeroll.) are obsolete and negative to productivity. Even if questioning these things might be mildly stressful for some; it will likely be a much more smooth deal than what it seems on the surface. So question authority, set those boundaries, advocate for yourself!

In summary, the best way to survive this month is: hold onto your self-worth. Build your self-worth up to what you actually, really deserve. (Which is a lot more than you probably think!) Take time to develop self-love. Create a foundation inside yourself to keep steady in the chaos that’ll be going on around you. Hold onto all of this and use your strength to face the toxicity in your life and do what’s best- either remove it from your life, or change it. Whether it’s a person or a job or a community; if you’re realizing you’re gaining nothing but toxic things from it, separation (or staying separated) is likely the best move.

Gossip and Advise

note: This advise was for August, but still a good read! Thank you birdie for writing it for us!

Astrological Signs by Season - dummies

GENERAL

If you’ve been waiting for a reason to make changes in your life, August is going to be the kick in the butt you’re needing. Anything you’ve been putting off is going to need to be addressed- Uranus is in retrograde, so without making those changes, you may find yourself feeling the burn. If you’re not quite sure where you need to work on things; take into consideration that Jupiter and Saturn are also going to be in opposition- so any sort of personal growth of your inner self, career, or passions is a good place to start. There’s probably been some inner turmoil regarding these things already, so take this as some motivation to really buckle down and work on it!

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

The majority of this month is still very much your month. And what a month it is- on top of Jupiter and Saturn being in opposition, you’ve got a New Moon coming into your sign in August, and Mercury popping in at the same time. So this is the month to put your ambition and drive into some major use- you’re going to want to make some changes. Whether in day-to-day life or your career, it’s time to butt heads and really put your opinion- even though it’s likely very different from others’- out there. And be strong about it. Sticking to your guns is going to be important; but make sure you don’t let yourself go too far with it. You’re going to need to keep your aggression and inclination to getting fired up in check- not everyone is going to want a full-on fight. So keeping a balance of your passion and strength and diplomacy will be crucial. Choose strong words, but have patience. As with all change, things take time to happen and for others to fully understand your vision.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)

Right at the tail of Leo begins your time in the sun, Virgo. And with everything going on, keeping your head on straight and holding fast to your self-discipline is going to be a handy skill to utilize. Thank goodness these are things you’re pretty good at! Use them to really hone your skills in communication- Leo isn’t the only one getting some attention from Mercury. Not only are you going to be going through some changes; but so will most of those around you, which means conflict may pop up. Whether at work or in the family, this may be a time to take up a leadership role and calm things down and solve some issues. Your solutions may not be fully welcomed by everyone- but it’s pretty likely you’ll be making the best decisions to keep things a little bit more in line. So make sure you don’t shut yourself down or back away from future challenges with others. Have faith in yourself and your strength that you have everyone’s best interest in mind.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 23)

Alright Libra, you’ve got some attention from Venus hitting on the 16th, so I’d start taking some time and thought to focus on your interpersonal relationships. If you’ve got a partner, this is going to be a crucial time to really have communication open- your boat may be rocked a bit this month. And if you’re a part of a team at work, school, sport, etc., keep that same sentiment in mind. Communication, open. Change, welcome. Things, take in stride. It’s likely many are going to seem a bit self-involved and not wanting to work with you or others; but keep in mind there’s a lot going on, so focus on keeping that balance of seeing all sides. With all of this, some relationships might shift in either direction, so this understanding and patience will be critical. If someone is leaving your life, do your best to not let it affect you more than it should. Things work themselves out in the end, which you know very well. You have your circle so hold tight to it and be welcome to any newcomers and new perspectives they offer.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 21)

This is definitely a time you’ll shine, Scorpio. Once you’ve got your mind set on something, you’ll get it. And this is the month to reach your goals. Especially anything career or relationship-oriented; making connections is going to be easier to do than usual and your drive is going to be very motivating to others. However- make sure this same drive doesn’t steamroll over others! You might find yourself fixated on a specific thing which may blind you to other options that might be a bit better for not only yourself, but for those around you. So be sure to take a moment or two to really consider all your options- and be sure to listen to what others have to say. There’s going to be some things that will sound very unappealing to you at that second- but after some thought, you might just change your mind. On the flipside, you might find yourself in the position of having to talk others out of certain viewpoints. You’re usually pretty good at laying out your words, so be sure to choose how you say things carefully to make the best impact.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)

Okiedokie Sagittarius; let’s find a path and stick to it this month. Though it goes against your nature, it may be a time to choose a side. Perhaps something small; but there’s going to be something that pops up that’s going to require a solid answer, so make sure you’ve got one. I’d start looking into possibilities in work, a relationship, or even something more spiritual. With all the shakiness of change going on in your life and around you, some stability is going to make things a lot easier on you. Be open to letting people in- sometimes communication is a bit of a broad concept for you, so it may be helpful to fully focus on certain things that have been troubling you and allowing someone to help you actually sort through things you’d normally keep a bit enigmatic. In turn, others may be more open than usual to listen to your outside and alternative perspective, which might excite you. Expect some deep discussions and maybe even to open up some minds to people who would otherwise be closed off.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)

You’re going to hate to hear this- but now is not the time to be stubborn. Things are going to come up that will likely lead to some conflict and arguments with coworkers or your partner- take some breaths and realize you may not know everything or be right. Hard to believe, I know. (Your humble astrologist happens to be very much a Capricorn.) Do some deep thinking and research to get some real solid knowledge on what you may end up having to fight a little about, and you may be able to reason your way through these potential issues rather than having to stubborn your way. Which might be a little more difficult than usual since there’s going to be some big changes going on around you and in your own life. Don’t let it stress you out, instead, really consider opening up about what you’re thinking and feeling to someone close. And actually address the things you may be feeling; this month isn’t going to work out well if you don’t fully communicate with everyone around you. If you do, though, and adapt to the changes well, the changes will be more of a breath of fresh air than a major stressor in life.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)

This might just be a very fulfilling month for you, Aquarius. With so many open to change, you might be able to move forward with changes you’ve really been wanting to make. Really focus on ones that improve quality of life- and don’t be afraid to let in others opinions and ideas, it’s likely they’ll have some good perspectives and will help you much more than hinder. Plus, the more voices you have along with your own, the likelihood of what you’re wanting will happen. The Full Moon- well, not just any full moon, but a Blue Moon, even; will give you the boost you’ll need. Keep yourself as inspiring as you are inspired and let others drive your ambition forward. Don’t be afraid to be assertive this month. The change you bring may very well be what others are needing this month as well.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20)

With all this seemingly chaotic need for change and communication, some deep thinking and feeling is going to be pretty necessary. Thankfully, that’s a strength of yours. You’re likely going to be a helpful sign this month, much like Aquarius. Others are going to need change and you’re very good at taking problems and thinking of outside-the-box solutions that most would never have considered. So expect to be approached for advice pretty often this month- but don’t let it drain you! Remember, change is needed for everybody right now, including you. So be sure to really set your boundaries and take some time to yourself. Your change may be more on the outside- in work, relationships, school, etc.- but that doesn’t mean you have to exhaust yourself with both that and trying to sort out others’ issues. Make sure to relax and put aside time to do the things you’ve really been wanting to do- take care of yourself!

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

You may just flourish this month, Aries. Change is something you’re good at, and you’ll have ample opportunity to lead the charge. Use your intelligence and charm to get those around you to be just as welcome to the change you’re making as you are- but! The catch is: go through with it. 100% this run. Unfinished business isn’t going to fly this month, so once you’ve got your goal set, finish it. See it through! If what you’re wanting is going to have to go through others, keep up that communication to make sure it’s moving. Maybe don’t nag; but some persistence is going to be key. And don’t forget, growth can happen on the inside, too. While orchestrating your big change on the outside, you may want to focus a little on yourself. Communication is a good place to start; think about initiating more conversations where you listen more than you speak and learn a new perspective you never thought to before.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)

Others are going to want you and your help, Taurus; but don’t let yourself lose yourself in others. You’ll be very handy in aiding others' change, and it’s likely you’ll find yourself siding with others out of convenience and a want to make things a bit easier on them. Don’t forget, though; the Uranus retrograde doesn’t mean all change needs to be others’ change. It can be- and should be- yours, too! Don’t let your opinion sway just to appease someone else. You’ve got your own wants and needs, so speak up! Now is the time to really communicate something for yourself and benefit from it. You’re no second-best, keep yourself your first priority for at least some of the time this month. There’s going to be a lot of loads to bear, and the only one you should bear is your own. Check things off of your personal change to-do list, and even if what you want goes against the wants of someone else- fight for it! You’ve got that stubbornness in you, and you may want to utilize it for yourself this time around.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21)

A lot is going on this month, Gemini. And you may just enjoy it. Communication is abound and you’ll feed off of that energy like nobody’s business- don’t be surprised if you find your motivation high and personal relationships strengthen. Don’t get overly excited, though; with all of this fun stuff comes conflict, and that’s where you may find yourself faltering a bit. You may find yourself more sensitive to miscommunications or over-communications and struggle to find the clarity necessary to fix a situation. So keep a level head and be patient. It’s likely you’ll be a passive help with outside change, so it might be a better idea to not get too involved in conflicts. You’ll probably end up passing on the information others want and need without realizing it. So instead, take that energy you’ve built up and focus it on yourself! If you have a partner, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to focus on your relationship, either. This is a great month to really take time on your innermost circle and show them how to really, really communicate.

CANCER (June 22 - July 22)

Don’t worry, Cancer. Your month may have passed, but you are going to have a very big month, regardless. You may find yourself a bit rocked by some changes, maybe ones not entirely welcome; but you’ll take them on easily enough by holding onto the foundation you’ve built with your personal relationships. Friends, family, and significant others will likely be very open to both communicating and listening, which will help you keep a level of stability important during a time full of upheaval. And this is going to be incredibly helpful to others- don’t be shocked if you find yourself acting as a “rock” to quite a few people. Find some joy in it- your chaotic change will be easy to handle to you, and that calm you carry through it will ease the craziness happening around you. This will go especially smoothly if you set and keep your boundaries- yes, you are a “rock” and glad to be- but in order to be a good one, you have to make sure you’re handling your own stuff and emotionally ready to be there for others. Investing in some self-care might be very helpful to you this month. Maybe a massage or that new pair of shoes you’ve been needing for work- a little treat will recharge your battery nicely.

PERSEID SHOWER PERSEID-ING OVER

August is going to be an absolutely brilliant month for the sky. So get your picnic blanket and basket ready, (and a telescope if you’ve got one!) because we’ve got the perseid meteor shower happening throughout the entire month, and Venus, Mars, and Mercury will be visible alongside the shower in the evenings. If you’ve been thinking of doing something special with a loved one or some friends, there’s no better time than now. Well, not necessarily right now; but if you’re wanting to plan out a neat little escapade, the meteor shower will be peaking in the early mornings of August 11th, 12th, and 13th. (A Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday respectively.)

The best way, in my opinion, to enjoy such a spectacle would be a simple outdoor set up. Find a peaceful enough place where you can see a wide expanse of sky- the further out of the city and light pollution you are, the better- and set up a sitting area. Snacks, of course, only elevate the experience. If you’re wanting to make it a larger event, camping would definitely make it something extra special. But if you’re unable to take multiple days to devote to enjoy the meteor shower, one night in your backyard isn’t bad at all!

Once you get your sights on the perfect place to set up, I’d plan to get the show on the road at around midnight or 1:00AM. I’m personally a night owl so that’s not a problem for me at all; but if you’re not quite up to staying up, a nap beforehand would be fantastic. Have a nice filling dinner, get a good post-meal nap in, wake up in time to watch some space rocks falling at incredible speeds. The time between midnight and 5:00AM is best; but obviously, you don’t have to sit around for the full 5 hours. Even if you just last a few minutes- there’s about 60 meteors per hour, so basically 1 per minute. So you’ll see a few! And Venus, Mars, and Mercury are just sitting around forever so you likely won’t miss those bright guys.

So, any plans to stare at the sky for a few hours? I know I’ll be heading down southward where the sky is a bit clearer and munching on a cosmic brownie while watching those babies do their thing. Maybe I’ll even make a few wishes.
Let us know if you did anything special for the shower! Share your night and give some ideas and inspiration for next year. :)
